Accusation: "The cross is pagan. It is among the many symbols that true Christians should avoid. Many people worship the cross. If Christ died in an electric chair, would everyone have little electric chairs around their necks? Christ didn't die on a cross but rather on a straight pole."
Answer: I agree that there are some cross pagan symbols such as the Egyptian ankh (See all my links below for more information). But the Romans were not intending to use a pagan symbol when crucifying people. The crucifixion cross ties/stakes were simply a method of execution. It is NOT related to the pagan cross symbols. A person would need to document/prove that the Romans were purposely using the pagan cross symbols in their executions. I have not yet seen any evidence of that. The cross ties that people, including JE-sus were crucified on, were not a symbol of a pagan god. However, it is an instrument of death. It is an electric chair. It is a shot-gun. It is NOT beautiful. It is not pretty. It is an instrument of DEATH. It was a symbol of hate toward Christians and Jews. However, it is not connected with pagan worship. A person can have a cross (WITHOUT an graven image of Christ upon it) as remembrance of his Death. However, we should not make the cross look pretty. It should look like what it was, an instrument of death. not of gold or silver. It is not a decoration.
It is TRUE that many people worship the cross. That doesn't mean all Christians who are using the cross are worshiping it. Some people try to claim that it wasn't a cross at all that JEsus was crucified on, but rather just a vertical stake. But historical and archaeological evidence shows that the Romans generally used a crossbar, not a vertical post alone, when crucifying individuals.
JESUS ON THE CROSS
Many people claim that Jesus died on a pagan symbol. They do not know what kind of filth is coming out of their mouth! JE-sus, our HOLY GOD, would NOT die for our sins on a pagan symbol. HE would not nail Himself, or our sins to a pagan symbol. That would be blasphemous. The Romans were just using a cruel method of execution. They did not have any consideration of pagan symbols in their choice of instrument of death.
To wear a cross does not mean they are worshipping the cross. I can also wear a hat or a tie. That doesn't mean I am worshipping the hat or a tie. Some people are guilty to focusing too much on the cross and some cross the line into worship of the cross such as the song "Old Rugged Cross". Just because some people wrongly focus or wrongly worship doesn't mean that all people that utilize the symbol of the cross are wrongly doing so. To many people it is just a simple reminder of what Christ did for them. It symbolizes the sacrifice of death of our Saviour. That is not a pagan symbolism.
1 Corinthians 1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize (Paul had his assistants to baptize people), but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
1 Corinthians 1:18
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
Galatians 5:11 And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased.
Galatians 6:12 As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.
Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
Ephesians 2:16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
Philippians 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Philippians 3:18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
Colossians 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The evidence is overwhelming that Jesus died on a Cross, not a single pole stake. The Cross is NOT pagan for a Christian to use it in remembrance of what Jesus did for us!
